I didn’t plan on going

in hopes of not seeing

All I  know is that if

helping her soak it and rub

hardened skin away

I knew that anything else

I ever do will  struggle

to match up to that deed

as if I will savor it

remind myself of it

in those early morning hours

when my gaze meets a mirror

calloused with humanity

as if she didn’t know

where our friendship

stood without her as

the mentor and me

the mentee, at last

I grasped the pebble

from her hand and said

“It is my turn.”

I am fearful I will turn

into a small fraction

of who i’ve worked to be

that physical evidence

will add up like numbers

with perfect logic

where 8 share everything
